Welcome back, dear readers, to the thrilling final final conclusion of our health tech saga! If you’ve been following along, you know we’ve journeyed from the humble beginnings of wearable devices to the interconnected world of Azure Health Data Services & Power Platform Today, we’re headed into the future with a splash of generative AI, a dash of Power Platform, and a whole lot of FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources, for the uninitiated).
So Grab your scotch, sit back, and let’s dive into the world of generative AI, Power Platform, and FHIR.
As a reminder In the first act I discussed how to connect up your Apple Watch to the world of FHIR to enable the sending of beats from your heart, via bytes from your iPhone and strings from the inter web.
Then in our second act I detailed how to take the data streams from the HealthKit world group and translate them into compatible Azure FHIR data so the health data server could understand and then match these values to a corresponding patient.
Then finally in our third act we delved into the awesome world of Power Platform and how it can be used to present and manipulate that juicy health data from the FHIR server in a friendly low code manner.
Today, it’s the proverbial robotic cherry on the cake, it’s the “PIÈCE DE RÉSISTANCE” we’re going to see how we can throw AI into this health tech odyssey and then find out what Ron Burgundy thinks of it all… hopefully not regret…
Generative AI and FHIR – A match made in health tech heaven
Last time, I told you it was the final delicacy, well I thought it was, as ever the tech landscape changed, Open AI launched ChatGPT then Microsoft launched Copilot, then the world went to AI Hype overload!
So how does this new fangled AI gibber jabber work in our health tech connected world? Well here’s the cool remix, we can now use all this Generative AI goodness to provide a “Chatty Cathy” interface over the health tech data stored in the FHIR service!
Say whaaat ??? I know Ron it’s pretty damn cool… “Don’t act like you’re not impressed.”
We’ll see how Copilot extensibility can transform the way healthcare professionals interact with patient data, making it more intuitive and accessible than ever before. So, buckle up and get ready for a ride through the cutting-edge of health tech!

Speed up your clinics with Copilot Extensibility

Picture this: You’re a healthcare professional, and you need to access patient data stored in Azure FHIR. But instead of navigating through endless menus and forms, you simply ask your custom Copilot. “Hey Copilot, show me the latest lab results for John Doe.” And voila!
The data appears in a sleek adaptive card, ready for your review. Sounds like magic? Well, it’s not. It’s the power of Copilot extensibility and Power Automate working together.
This seamless interaction is made possible by the integration of generative AI with the FHIR connector in Power Automate. By leveraging natural language processing, Copilot can understand and respond to complex queries, ultimately making it easier for healthcare professionals to access the information they need.
No more clicking through multiple screens or searching for the right data – just ask, and you shall receive. And that’s right Ron this stuff is pure gasoline….
The raw emotions of FHIR
The real hero of our story is the FHIR connector in Power Automate. This nifty tool allows you to create bespoke workflows that connect to Azure FHIR, pulling in data and presenting it in a user-friendly format formatting it in such a way you can return results to Copilot.
But the magic doesn’t stop there. With Power Automate fetching the data, you can then format and return the values in a structured way back to Copilot which can then display the data components required to the end user, all through a simple conversational interface.
And because Power Automate is well awesome, you can then also automate routine tasks, set up alerts, and even trigger actions based on specific conditions.
So whether it’s lab results, patient records, or appointment schedules, the FHIR connector makes it all accessible via conversations with just a few clicks.
I know Ron, it’s alot to take in but trust me its worth the emotion….

A regrettable day in the life of a clinician

Let’s take a moment to imagine a day in the life of a healthcare professional using this technology.
Dr. Burgundy, our intrepid hero, starts the day with a cup of coffee (and scotch) and fires up his trusty mobile device or computer and begins with a quick chat with Copilot.
“Good morning, Copilot. What’s on my schedule today?” Copilot responds with a detailed list of appointments, complete with patient demographics and notes.
Dr. Burgundy chuckles, “If only my coffee maker was this smart!”
As the day progresses, Dr. Burgundy relies on Copilot to access the most recent patient data, update records, pull observations and even send reminders to patients about upcoming appointments.
The ease and efficiency of this technology allow Dr. Burgundy to focus more on patient care and less on administrative tasks and other Burgundy activities
And let’s be honest, Ron why wouldn’t you want a smart science based assistant to help navigate the complexities of healthcare?

The peaks of excitement, escalated healthcare…

At the end of the day, the goal of all this technology is to improve patient care. By making data more accessible and easier to interact with, healthcare professionals and our intrepid hero Dr Burgundy can spend less time on administrative tasks and more time with his patients.
Imagine a world where doctors and nurses can access patient information with a simple voice or text command through a conversational interface, no buttons to click no more endless screens to navigate with the right contextual information available in a single pane of glass, where you are collaborating with others.
A world where critical alerts are delivered instantly, and where patient care is enhanced through seamless technology. That’s the future we can build with Azure Health Data Services, Power Platform, and Copilot.
And that, dear viewers, is a happy ending we can all get behind. I know Ron, it’s a great place to be… I need a beer also..
And that’s definitely the end to the series…
So As we wrap up this series… again it’s even more clear that the future of health tech is bright.
With cloud platforms and tools like Azure Health Data Services, Power Platform, and Copilot, we’re just scratching the surface of what’s possible.
So stay tuned, because if there is another chapter in this story is sure to be even more exciting.
The journey from wrist to cloud has been an incredible one, filled with innovation, challenges, and breakthroughs.
And while this may be the end of our current series, it’s just the beginning of what’s to come in the world of connected health tech.
